Despite what you might think, there are tips and tricks to preventing your engine from overheating. This article has some great points to share.

Owning your own car is great for so many reasons, including the ability to just pack up your friends and family on a hot day and make your way to the beach or to take a road trip. Unfortunately, this is also the time when you see many motorists stranded on the side of the road with steam pouring from their engines. As we start to come into the warmer months, Synthetics Northwest has prepared a great article with easy-to-adopt tips which can help both you and your engine to keep your cool while driving in hot weather.

Less Traffic

Not only is getting caught in traffic an inconvenience, but it also puts a strain on your engine which doesn’t have the benefit of flowing air to help moderate its temperature.
  • Make a list of your errands and look for alternate routes which don’t involve as much traffic or places where you will be stopped. This may mean that you spend an extra 15 minutes behind the wheel, but it will be better than getting stuck on the side of the road for an hour.
  • Give some thoughts to performing your errands early in the morning before it has become too hot, or in the evening when it cools down and traffic has alleviated.
If you do become caught in traffic, shifting into neutral and revving your engine will cause the fan to spin, giving your engine a very temporary reprieve.

Early Warning Signs

Despite what you may think, the temperature gauge isn’t a sign of what will come, it’s a sign of what can come if you don’t heed its warning. The next time that you can see it starting to rise, look ahead and identify any places you can safely pull over if you have to. If you can’t see anything coming up, consider finding space now, before it gets too hot and you are stuck without options. Simply waiting for traffic to start moving again or the temperature drop is the easiest way to prevent an overheated engine.

Check Your Fluids

Every one of the fluids your engine utilizes is important and helps it to perform efficiently. The more efficient your engine performs, the fewer chances there are of it overheating. For this reason, take some to check each and every one of the fluids your engine uses, and flush it out and replace it with a new product. Windows Instead

You may not enjoy this tip, but it could be the most beneficial to you. Instead of using your A/C, lower your windows and allow the flow of fresh air into your vehicle cool you down as stale and hot air is pushed out. Each time that you switch on your air conditioning, you use a secondary smaller motor which draws its power from your engine, which is already struggling to keep up with the heat. This can cause your engine to overheat very quickly.

What to Do If It Happens

If you find yourself driving and steam starts to pour from your engine, there isn’t much else you can do except to safely pull over and wait for it to cool down. However, there are some things which you shouldn’t do while you wait:
  • The radiator cap will be hotter than you think, so don’t touch it. Instead, safely and slowly move your hand closer to gauge its temperature. While the cap itself presents danger, the pressurized hot water inside can also splash out and cause injury.
  • Once the radiator has cooled enough for you to safely remove the cap, resist the urge to immediately fill it with cold water and coolant. Cold water poured into a hot radiator can cause it to crack, so wait for it to cool down more, first.
