With the summer weather finally here, it’s a perfect time to take your friends or your family on a road trip. This article has some tips which can help you plan a stress-free adventure.

It’s safe to say that the summer months and season is the most favored of all. Not just because the sky is clear and the sun is shining warmth down throughout the day, but also because it’s the time when children and parents are on vacation from school and work, respectively. If you and your family or a group of friends will be taking advantage of the great weather by enjoying a road trip, Synthetics Northwest has a great post with some tips to help make yours a stress-free adventure.

Basic Plan

The best place to start is with a plan, however, it’s important that you don’t over-plan to the point where the road trip becomes too structured to be enjoyable. Stick with just these:
  • What is the destination?
  • Which route will you take?
  • Is there a backup route in the event of problems on the road?
  • Consider a driving schedule so that everybody knows when they need to be ready.
  • Who is in charge of drinks and snacks?
Simple planning tips like these are enough to ensure that your road trip has enough structure to get everybody at your destination safely and happily, but allows lots of flexibility to enjoy the adventure ahead.

Snacks for Your Engine

Similar to how you and your friends enjoy snacks during your journey, so too does your engine needs its own version of snacks. Of course, this doesn’t include soda or candy, but rather the range of engine fluids your engine needs to operate. A couple of days before you leave, make some time to check the fluids in your vehicle, starting with these:
  • Engine oil/Engine Lubricant
  • Transmission Fluid
  • Brake Fluid
  • Power Steering Fluid
  • Even soap and water for your wipers
If any of these fluid levels are low or you can’t remember the last time you replaced any of them, take the opportunity before your road trip to flush out each of the fluids and their lines and replace it with fresh product. Tire Check

Even though your tires may look strong and tough, they are still susceptible to damage and harm, it largely just goes unnoticed. This time, before your road trip, take your car out into the sunlight and check your tires, paying close attention to these items:
  • Areas where there is no tread/bald spots
  • Debris lodged in the tread
  • Any items which have punctured the tire, such as a stuck nail
  • Are there any cracks around the tire which could lead to a blowout?
If any of the above is present then be sure to have the tire repaired or even replaced before driving again.

Even if your car was built 10 years ago, there is still a myriad or cables and wiring which you can’t see that works to both keep your vehicle operating and to keep it safe. However, just because you can’t see any of the wires doesn’t mean that they can’t incur damage or wear. With a friend or family member sitting in the driver seat operating the controls, look around your vehicle to ensure all of the electrics are working, in particular:
  • Each headlamp operates and is bright
  • Brake and tail lights work correctly and are bright
  • Reverse lights are visible
  • Indicators operate correctly
  • Dash Lights are working
While these tips may seem focused for somebody driving at night, your brake, tail, and indicators are all used during the day to help drivers see your intentions. Of course, when it comes to a road trip, there is a good chance that you will find yourself driving through darker conditions than you anticipated, which means that you need all of your vehicle lights to be working.
